FAQ 9. One way

FAQ 9. One way

Can Putney Road be amended to be one way?

What LCC say:

No – the key objectives of the scheme are to improve movements between Aylestone Road and Welford Road, in both directions, and to improve access to businesses on the Freemen’s Common Industrial Estate. Amending Putney Road to be one way would not deliver the objectives of the project.

What we say:

The stated objectives of the scheme appear to change according to the question asked! What happened to the ‘positive localised benefits for businesses and residents’, and the strategic emphasis on connecting the east and west of the city and the access to the motorway networks rather than the more restricted link described here?

The scheme could be amended to one-way if the council wanted, but it doesn’t. A one-way scheme could meet the objectives to the same extent as this two-way scheme does for Putney Link Road on its own – because it only functions as a link road in one direction. What a one-way scheme cannot do is provide a two way link for a further road across to Evesham Road – that’s why it won’t be only one-way.
