FAQ 7. New junction

FAQ 7. New junction

Clarendon Park residents were previously told that this junction would never be built

What LCC says:

The city continues to change considerably in terms of development and economic growth. It is the council’s responsibility, and vital for the growth of the city, to provide a suitable highway network. The area around Aylestone Road and Welford Road is home to many important institutions in the city whose importance has grown – Leicester City Football Club, Leicester Tigers, Leicestershire County Cricket Club, the Leicester Royal Infirmary, the University of Leicester, and De Montfort University. Improving access to these will be a benefit to the city.

What we say:

The council is correct to say the we were told this junction would never be built. It was planned but abandoned in the face of strong local opposition because it was obvious it would bring much additional traffic from outside through this area. That is still true today, even if the council says otherwise.

We have already argued in detail that this scheme does not offer improved access for residents, or many other people for that matter, to the institutions and locations listed above. In this sense the claim that improving access to these institutions will benefit the city is false because the Putney Link Road on its own cannot do these things.

We accept the need to review things, but we oppose this road because it is not a solution to the problems the council says it helps solve. We oppose this road because of the strategic intention of creating a west-east link as part of what is in effect a middle ring road.

The council said it would not build this junction, and is now building it. Now the council says it is not planning to build the Evesham Road link. What do you make of that?
