Welcome

Overview

Putney Road Say No is a group of Clarendon Park residents concerned about the impact of the Putney Road Link on our neighbourhood and are campaigning to stop this link road being opened.

Leicester City Council are running a consultation on this until 29th April 2018 and have delivered an information booklet to properties near Putney Road.

In response to this, the Putney Road Say No campaign group have put together a Campaign Leaflet that we've delivered to properties in and around Clarendon Park. This outlines how the project will affect you, what action you can take and how to get involved in the campaign (if you want to).

There's not enough space to explain everything on the Campaign Leaflet, so we've put together this web site to provide the detail behind the leaflet.

Alternatively, you can read our documents on why Leicester City Council should think again about building this link road:

Why we are opposed to building the Putney Link Road

The Putney Road link is part of a plan to build a new east-west traffic route across Leicester using Putney Road as a link road. A new junction at Putney Road West and Aylestone Road will make Putney Road a two-way link road to Welford Road and through Clarendon Park to London Road and beyond. A further link from Aylestone Road through Evesham Road to Narborough Road in the west will complete this longer link – a new middle ring road through Clarendon Park.

This is why we oppose it:
  • It will bring extra traffic through Clarendon Park
  • This will mean more congestion and more queuing traffic
  • And more air pollution and reduced air quality
  • There will be more rat-running to avoid increased congestion on other roads
  • The Queen’s Road shopping area will be more congested with traffic
  • Bus services will be delayed
  • Cycling and walking will become more dangerous
All this will get much worse when the Evesham Road link is built. The council say the Putney Link Road is not connected with the Evesham Road link. We say it is.

Why we say the Putney Link Road is connected with the Evesham Road link:
  • The council say it is. (In fairness although they said it would ‘greatly enhance the viability of building the Evesham Road link’, and that the Putney Link Road would provide preparatory work for it, and they included a map showing it, they say the two links are definitely not connected).
  • The City Mayor doesn’t rule it out and can see the benefits of it
  • The claimed traffic benefits of the Putney Link Road cannot happen without the Evesham Road link
  • The traffic modelling for Putney Link Road shows it doesn’t work as an east-west link road on its own
  • The design of the new junction with Aylestone Road is preparatory for it
This is also why we oppose the Putney Link Road - because the Evesham Road link would then make the traffic position in Clarendon Park much worse.

Other things about this scheme which concerns us:
  • It is controversial and was opposed by local people in the past, which is why the Council previously promised not to build it, but now is
  • Nobody knew about this road plan, not even our local councillors - we think this was a deliberate attempt to get it through before anyone could object
  • The Freeman’s Common development by the university and their proposals to traffic calm University Road will also add extra traffic to Clarendon Park – enough is enough!
  • We don’t think this scheme will work, and we don’t think it will make any positive contribution to solving Leicester’s transport problems.

What can I do?

If you agree with what we say then join with us in opposing the Putney Link Road and:
